Assessment of Pupils
All pupils will be assessed on admission to the school. During their time in the school their teachers will regularly carry out formative assessments so that each pupil is given work which is appropriate for their abilities.
Pupils take termly formal tests in English and maths as well as periodic standardised assessment for English, maths, reading and cognitive ability. The small class sizes allow for pupils’ progress to be monitored closely by their class teachers outside of formal assessment.
There will be opportunities for parents to meet with their child’s teacher at any time, in addition to this there will be formal Parents’ Evenings in terms 1 and 2. Parents will receive a written report on their child’s progress at the end of term 3.
Results for 2020-2021
We are pleased to report that despite the challenges which Covid and remote learning have brought to our pupils (and parents and staff) we are again very proud of our pupils and their academic achievement in the year. We assess our pupils using a range of assessment approaches (as described above) against age related expectations which reference the national curriculum aims.
In the academic year to July 2021 formative and summative assessments over the year show that:
– In maths, most pupils are working at a level expected for their age and that one third of the pupils exceeded this expectation.
– In writing, most pupils are working at a level expected for their age and that one fifth of the pupils exceeded this expectation.
– In reading, all pupils are working at a level expected for their age and that three quarters of the pupils exceeded this expectation.
These results are a testament to our pupils’ continued hard work despite the challenges of remote schooling and also to the flexibility and determination of our staff and parents.
With an increasing return of normality to our school life in 2021-2022 we expect that by July 2022 all pupils will be working at a level expected for their age and that the majority will exceed this expectation in these areas of assessment.
